Letter from Home
Letter from Home
We came across the piece of music, ‘Letter from Home’ by Aaron Copland last year and we wanted to make a response to the music.
We all have places that we feel that we belong to, from the present and the past. Memories from these stay with us all our lives; the sight, smell and sound is bound up in these points of contact.
Photographs and paintings of memories of home;

As a habit, I try to maintain a certain balance between control and uncertainty. The best way to achieve this, I find, is through practice, accepting and appreciating the nuances of the medium and always keeping up the will to learn.
I was born and brought up in Seville, Spain. After moving to Scotland in 2001, I am now based in the Yarrow valley, Selkirk. I have been working on long term personal photographic projects with ethnic minority communities and the way they live nowadays. More recently, using nineteenth century printing processes, I’ve been photographing Scottish Victorian architecture.

Graphic design and painting are pretty close together, at least as far as my work goes. Both are concerned with getting across a message by composition, empty space and colour. I see, as I’m trained to see, from that point of view.
Home equates, for me, to knowing someone or somewhere well. I have revisited old memories and places for this exhibition and found they all have the same spirit which I hope to communicate in these paintings. The painter, Patrick George said of one the reasons he painted was that: ‘I believe we are in heaven and it’s high time people realised that’. (2010 exhibition catalogue for Browse & Darby gallery).
