Quiet Water

Wednesday 17 August – Saturday 24 September 2022

Burnside gallery presents paintings and wood engravings, showing the nature of the East Lothian landscape. Two artists who are linked by their interest in sculptural shape and line.

Jessie Ann Matthew A photographer, textile artist and a painter, she is showing paintings of her home countryside. She shows a series of paintings of the Keith Water in East Lothian where she and her family had trips during lockdown. She says, I would take my watercolours and try to capture the peacefulness of the surroundings ... Beside the river was a pocket of quiet and a place of restoration. She uses colour and overlapping line to explain the way she sees.

Jonathan Gibbs has been an illustrator and art college lecturer all his working life. He has shown in many Edinburgh and London galleries and is interested in the process and practice of his print making and paintings. He uses certain recurring icons or emblems and shifting shapes balanced by harmonic lines. He says, Graphic art, design, fine art and illustration all happily co-exist in my work.
